synthises: The dark soul of Link

Proposal:

For my 4th project, i will be synthesizing the worlds of dark souls and the legend of Zelda. I will be pitting Link against the Gaping Dragon, a massive boss with horrifying features. I will be doing this on digital art, using the software Medibang, my art style will be based on Breath of the Wild. i want to try to take the dark and depressing dark souls and mash it with the Zelda style, the epic backgrounds, and fights, as well as the presence of both entities.

Artist of inspiration:

My artist of inspiration is Satoru Takizawa. He is the lead art director for Breath of the wild. He also was in charge of Skyward sword and twilight princess. He created the Breath of the wild style through concept and they ran with it creating one of the most stunning games ever.

(example of his piece)

Deciding to go with the breath of the wild style i realized i needed to get the main character down perfectly. I got to work on Link immediately
I had gotten the basic outline done and proceeded to work on the signature blue tunic.

After a few days, i made some serious headway on Link
By now the basic colors and shading have been laid down.

The Monster:
I decided to use the Gaping Dragon from dark souls one. The beast is massive with its torso ripped open to reveal massive teeth. The thing of nightmares and the developers From Software knew it.
working on the legs I used different hues of brown and grey as well as some dark greens.

The dragon gave me some troubles as the shading didn't look quite right. continued refining the legs and moved onto the arms.

After a caffeine-fueled all-nighter and multiple days of refining, I got a beast i was happy with.

The Background:
For the background, I chose what would hopefully look like a massive drop with cliffs on the sides and a rough rendition of Hyrule castle in the background. As if Hyrule was invaded by the Dark.

Working on the background I encountered some issues with perspective and how the dragon seemed off. After some troubleshooting, I got it to how I wanted it.
The very beginning so far.

Continuing on the background i added the light source of a full bone-white moon.

Finally, the background was finished and it was time to put it all together.

The finale:
This is what happened when I finally put the layers all together.

Self-assessment:
Where to begin...I definitely had too big of a goal in mind for my first ever digital piece. it's not a masterpiece, but more of a piece I can say i grew with. Working on the piece i realized how important a light source was. The shading should look separate and not a perfect fluid color change. As beautiful as it may be, it was pointed out by my friend Alex for this style it shows no real depth. I whole heartedly agree with him. The standing out of the colors really make this piece what it is. I would need to definitely work on the coloring and the use of shading so I would not have to use the black lines of the outline. The background id say could use work, but with a time crunch, I had to sacrifice it with a simpler one, which made it less busy working out to my favor.

Artist statement:
This piece is the accumulation of what Dark souls in Breath of the wild would be. A dark and hostile world that wishes to corrupt all, or save it. Taking the gaping dragon from dark souls 1 and the undead burg, i created the background that set this piece forward. Looking at it you can start to create a story in your head, whether that be how link got there and why, or asking how the hell this came to be. I mashed the two worlds together to create a world of an endless story. A world in a picture if you will.
