Compare and Contrast

For this project, i decided to compare and contrast the old new york from the 1920s and the new york of modern time. i decided to do this by doing a direct side by side compariosn.the modern-day New York would be done using gouache and chalk pastel. The 1920’s New York would be done in graphite.

My artist of influence is Sarah Burns. She works mostly in gouache and i lie the way she laid it down creating nice bold colors that blended into lighter and softer colors.
(Example of her work)

Week one: I started the outlines and i did the art piece in sections. I started to work on the bottom.
right to give me a good place to work up from

i then worked on the sky using chalk pastels.
Soon afterward i had finished the right side of my piece towards the end of week 2
It was time for me to work on the 1920 side. I did this side using charcoal and graphite. This side went much faster and gave me a nice look i love. Here is the overall finished piece:

I could have definitely added more detail but with time constraints i believe i put out the best i could for this project. I am happy with it but i could have added more details to show it was NewYork and more movie posters on the modern day side.

This piece shows how New York has changed over time. There are far more modern buildings and more signs in lights than there were in the 1920s. There are more skyscrapers and a far more lit up new york in the modern day. The artist of influence definitely had an influence on the Guashe and the sky itself going after her style.
